Lagos

Lagos is one of the prettiest coastal cities in the Algarve with an active fishing port and an old centre still enclosed by the original protective walls dating back to the 14th and 16th centuries. In the town you can admire the Baroque church of Santo Antonio with its impressive gold plated altar and the vases decorated with “azulejos” from the 18th century. Lagos’ main attraction is the seaside with some of the most beautiful beaches of the Algarve, like Praia de Dona Ana, which can be reached after a 25 minute walk from the centre of the town, Praia do Camilo and Meia Praia, a 4-kolometre stretch of sand east of Lagos. Three kilometres from Lagos is the most spectacular promontory of the Algarve’s southern coast, Ponta da Piedade that shelters the bay of Lagos with its caves, rocks and wonderfully transparent waters. Its magnitude is best appreciated arriving via sea; boats are available for hire at the newly built marina. There is also access by boat to innumerable beautiful sea caves and hollows around the promontory.
