Madeira Transport

From the Airport
The main airport is 16 km from Funchal. There are daily connections to Lisbon, Porto and Porto Santo, the other inhabited island in the archipelago. There is also a weekly flight to the island of Terceira in the Azores, which becomes a daily flight between April and September.
The airport is connected with Funchal by a bus service and by taxi; the price of a taxi is about 10 times greater than the bus ticket.

By Ferry
The only port in Madeira is Funchal, from where there are daily connections with Porto Santo. There isn’t a passenger service with mainland Portugal, but only a cargo ship service.

Moving around the island
The best way to move around Madeira is by car, but driving on the narrow steep and winding roads is not easy; what could appear a short distance in matter of kilometers could in actual facts take hours because of the condition of the roads that were not designed for speed.
Those choosing not to drive can use the public bus service or a taxi.
