The island of Terceira has a rocky coastline and is partly formed by highlands surrounded by mountains, the tallest of which is the volcano Caldeira de Santa Barbara reaching 1023 metres. Angra do Heroismo, the island’s main centre as well as the bishop see of the Azores, ha an interesting historic centre with many examples of baroque architecture. Monuments worth mentioning are the Misericordia church, the convent of Sao Francisco dating back to the 15th century and the Cathedral built in 1568. To enjoy the best views over the city visit the Sao Joao Batista Fortress built by the Spanish in the 17th century. The town of Praia da Vitoria, a fortified port town with a beautiful beach and a Manueline church, is also worth a visit.
