Sagres is a fishing village situated just east of Land’s End, the point of land that was believed to be the end of the world before Columbus’ famous voyage to the "Far East." Prince Henry the Navigator in the 15th century started the navigator’s school in the “Fortaleza de Ponta de Sagres”, which invented the caravel and the port-book. The fortress, which was destroyed during the 1755 earthquake and rebuilt in 1793, houses an interesting exhibition on the discoveries (descobrimentos); particularly outstanding is the stone wind rose with a 43m diameter and the small white chapel covered in azulejos.
